The Transformer Calculator is a useful tool for determining various parameters within transformer equations, including primary and secondary voltages, currents, and turns.

This calculator facilitates transformer calculations for:

  • Transformer Turns Ratio - Current and Turns
  • Transformer Turns Ratio - Volts and Turns
  • Transformer Turns Ratio - Volts and Current

The results will indicate whether the transformer is a step-up or a step-down device.

Transformers serve primarily as power converters, operating as either step-up or step-down devices depending on their application. A step-up transformer increases low AC voltage to a higher level, while a step-down transformer reduces high AC voltage to a lower level. For instance, in a country with a standard usage of 110V, a step-up transformer will convert this voltage to 220V, whereas a step-down transformer will do the inverse.

A transformer typically comprises a soft iron core with two insulated coils—known as the primary and secondary coils—wound around it. These coils can either be positioned on separate limbs of the core or stacked directly on top of each other.

The coil where the alternating voltage is applied is referred to as the primary coil or primary winding. The application of an alternating voltage creates a varying magnetic field around the primary coil, which in turn induces an alternating current in the secondary coil. The magnitude of the voltage induced in the secondary coil is dependent on the number of turns within that coil.

All transformers come with a nameplate rating indicating their operational limits. It is advisable to operate within these specified limits to ensure safety and efficiency. While utilizing a step-down transformer below its limit allows for versatile applications, exceeding this limit poses significant risks, including potential Electrical failures.

The relationship governing the voltage, current, and number of turns in each coil is expressed by the equation:

Vp/Vs = Np/Ns = Is/Ip

Where:

  • Vp - Primary voltage
  • Vs - Secondary voltage
  • Np - Primary turns
  • Ns - Secondary turns
  • Ip - Primary current
  • Is - Secondary current
